Selling the Corrado….

August 4th, 2008 at 10:40 pm (Uncategorized)

Ok, so, I’m parting out the Corrado now, and looking for a new car. I have absolutely no confidence that the Saturn I am driving will last the semester. I’ve got a lot of offers for parts, a lot of people telling me to sell it (but not wanting to buy, so fuck you!) and a lot of lowballers, which I’m more or less ignoring. Not selling the CF hood that’s probably worth $300 + shipping for $200, shipped, across the US. That shipping will cost $150 at least. Same deal with the tranny. Rawr.

In other news, I only need to buy 1 or maybe 2 books! A Geology book and a japanese book that I might be able to mooch off a friend…

I ordered my new camera today- a Nikon N90S with vertical grip and data back, and two new lenses that will work with my D50 too, a 35-80mm and a 75-300mm AF-I lens from Nikkor, along with a strap. (4 auctions.) All for the sweet sweet tune of $216. I love ebay!

I need a new tripod and a bag that can hold all three cameras, which is my current number. A D50, an N2000, and the new N92S. I want to replace the N2000 body with a nicer fully manual camera… maybe an FE or some such.

Lordfly and I have opened our store, Grid.Living. Check us out in Fondo!

An update? Realllllyyy?

July 23rd, 2008 at 10:32 am (Uncategorized)

Yarly.

It’s beed quite the exciting summer here at Grey Dawning. I’ve been working three jobs, including Second Life and the Library, and I’ve been slowly prepping my Corrado for the 2009 SCCA Rallycross, Autocross, and Rally season. (Thus the three jobs.)

At this point I’m getting ready to register for classes (I know, hurry up, right?!) and working at a miniature golf course. Pay is excellent here, $10/hr, but not a lot of hours, so I wind up making less than I do at the library. x.x Useless.

I’ve got a new store on the ‘Dirty’ sim in Second Life, as well as a nice little medieval town there that I’m prepping for use in a machinima. That still has some work to do, I’m currently designing sculpties to use on the set.

I’ve also been very active on the Haibane Renmei MOO, based off of the series by Yoshitoshi ABe. If you haven’t seen this series yet, it’s highly recommended! You can access the MOO at: telnet://greydawning.net:4000

Looking for a new camera, too. I need a good film camera for the upcoming school year (3 darkroom classes FTW) and I’m looking for a lightly useed Nikon F4 body and maybe a lens or two. (I do have plenty of nikon lenses but I’m always up for new ones!) Planning on converting part of my basement for a darkroom, I know one of the high schools in the area is removing their darkroom and will be looking to sell off some of the equipment on the cheap. Woohoo for me! Maybe I can get that awesome revolving door? *Drool*

Got a new laptop, finally (mine was stolen earlier this year, although I’m not sure if I posted that here?), a Toshiba Portege 3450 Tablet. It’s not quite what I was expecting (was billed to me as an M200) but it’s serving its purpose well enough and the tablet features are definetly worth it even if the computer is a bit slow. I’m hoping to replace it with an M200 sometime in the near future.

I also got a Bass Guitar, you can see some pics of my dog Duncan and me practicing on my Flickr Page. Some other new things on Flickr are photos from the 4th of July fireworks and a selection of my photos from WUULF ‘08 at Ghost Ranch, NM.

Whew! What a summer. It’s been busy but fun!

Burned Cars & Torched Books

February 27th, 2008 at 5:06 pm (Uncategorized)

So, I get into work today and there’s a cute little Camaro sitting in the parking lot with a tow truck behind it. The hood seems a little rusted out, which is a shame, but it looks to be in good condition… Except that it’s smoking. Oh, and that’s not rust, it’s charred paint.

??

Yeah, minutes before I got in, the car was on fire. As in ‘whoosh’ type on fire. The lady had just started to go into the library when it caught- she rushed back to get her dog out (both were completely safe), but didn’t get the books- they’re pretty much torched, and my first assignment of the day was to introduce them to Mr Dumpster. (Pics later)

From what I’ve been told, the fire department dispatcher actually put her on hold when she called 911. Ann called from the branch and said that there was??burning car in our lot, and THEN they sent the truck, after asking her a couple of useless questions like “What kind of car is it?” (Well, it’s currently engulfed in a ball of FIRE, but if you want I can go and ask…) and “Where is it located?” (Trace the damn call and follow the giant pillar of black smoke! Better yet, look out the window!) (Comments are my own.) Turns out the lady’s car had recently been totalled, and she had just gotten this one today. (Whether from a friend or a dealer in uncertain.) Hopefully it’s already insured!

Debbi attempted to put the flames out with one of our little ABC fire extenguishers, needless to say, that wasn’t going to work, but the fire truck did arrive in about 5 minutes and by the time I got in it was old news.

23 Things - Bloglist Update

February 25th, 2008 at 5:37 pm (Uncategorized)

Remember back when we were playing with the Wiki, adding our blogs to it? Well, the poor wiki page was getting jam packed! It was impossible to just browse through and find someone, there were too many listings.

So, I went and organized it. The bloglist section of the page is now organized by Library/Branch. Hopefully the edit doesn’t get reverted. Rawr.

23 Things - Flickr

February 24th, 2008 at 2:34 pm (Art, Work)

So, items 5, 6, and 7 on our ‘23 Things’ involve Flickr, the photo sharing site.

??Well, as you can see by my Flickr bar on the side of the site, I certainly know how to use Flickr, so I’ll just talk about a few of my photos on it, instead.

The most recent photos are edits of the same shot- Flitterbee and Flitterby. Flitterbee has been edited so that all of the colors except those in the leaves has been desaturated; I did this using photoshop but you can also use Paint.Net, the GIMP, or even Google’s Picasa.

??Flitterbee

??

The second is essentially the original image- I ran it through a quick noise reduction filter to clean up the shadows and that’s it. It probably could have used some color balancing but I like it how it is.

Flitterby

??

So, that’s what I do on Flickr! Feel free to browse through my photos and comment- you’ll need a flick account but that’s pretty easy and free. If you head back towards the beginning of my account you might see some pictures of my Corgis, Oliver & Duncan.

23 Things: Wikis

February 23rd, 2008 at 4:27 pm (Uncategorized)

Item #3 on the ‘23 Things’ I’m supposed to be doing for work is to exploer and comment on Wikis. I’ve been an avid supporter of Wikipedia for years, and I find it a useful way to find reliable sources. It is not, as has been said so many times, a reliable source in and of itself- but the citations are excellent ways to find reliable information. It’s also quite useful when researching pop-culture, although sometimes I have to laugh at how different the writer’s perspective is from mine.

(Please see the edit at the end of the post that relates to the comments below, they are no longer applicable to the staff intranet wiki.)

One thing that does concern me, however, is our own staff Wiki here at the library. Most members of the staff are unable to make new pages, which at first doesn’t seem to be a bad thing. The reason it’s annoying is because it prevents us from creating Talk or Discussion pages, which are a critical facet of a successful and organized Wiki. For instance, I’d like to make some edits to the BR page, however, I’d rather not just go in and add them- I’d like to post my edits and then invite critiques from my coworkers here at BR. The best (and traditional) way to do this is through the discussion page, however, it doesn’t exist! Since I can’t create it, that means that any changes I want to make would have to go live instantly, which is a recipe for problems.

I’m not even sure why staff are restricted; this isn’t a public Wiki and staff should be trusted not to create useless or random pages, and I think we’d see a lot more use out of the Wiki if we had this ability. We can edit any page we like, so the opportunity for spam or vandalism is already there, and I somehow doubt space is a major concern on our systems.

Just my $.02

??

Edit Post-Publish: Well, actually, it seems that this restriction has been lifted between the last time I actually played with the Wiki (sometime after it first came out) and now… I’ll leave my original thoughts up here because they’re still a valid critique of the way many Wikis operate, but they don’t seem to apply to the staff intranet anymore.

Updates in the works…

February 23rd, 2008 at 2:07 pm (Uncategorized)

I’m planning on doing some updates to the site this weekend, look for reasonably new computer statistics and an updated ‘About Me’. I’ll probably get around to posting my 2007/2008??portfolio, for that matter. (Finally, eh?)

??

Edit: I don’t know what’s causing the ?? in my posts, but they aren’t supposed to be there. Grr.

More land?

February 23rd, 2008 at 10:37 am (Second Life, Work)

So, I’ve been without land for a while- the tier on the land I had was impossible to maintain for a while and it got repossessed rather quickly.

I do like having land in Second Life- I like to be able to build what I like, when I like, and I like having a place to sell it. With these requirements, I was planning on heading back to mainland from Azure…

Yeah, right. Good one.

Land there is freaking expensive! I’m sticking with Azure!

Looking at some of their ‘city’ land- double prim and commercial approved. Not a lot of prims -257, but that should be enough for a small shop that’s decently detailed. Looking to be selling my prefabs this go-round, and maybe they’ll actually sell enough to pay the tier! I’d need to sell 2-3 a week to pay for the tier and a decent classifieds, hopefully that will work out.
